That cute t-shirt cost 700 gallons of water. Someone was paid $0.02 cents to make it, most likely in an unsafe and unregulated environment. Between the production of the raw materials, traveling around the world to be made into fabric that is chemically processed, and then being sewn and distributed, tons of greenhouse emissions were created. Was it worth it?
Visit us on Instagram to Price Check your purchases and see what your wardrobe actually cost.
Price Check is a multi-phase project aimed at interrupting the impulse purchase process.
Part 1 is an Instagram account designed to look like modern marketing materials showing the 'prices' of everyday clothes items. The costs presented are water usage, labor, and CO2 Equivalent (greenhouse emissions) figures. CO2E was calculated using The 2030 Project calculator. The figures presented are low estimates as they do not include the CO2E created by distribution of goods from location of manufacture to the location of the sale.
Part 2 is a small label designed to be anonymously attached to a garment swing tag. The label shows only a QR code and 'Price Check'. Scanning the QR code takes the viewer to a landing page with an image of a forest and persuasive text. These stickers will be distributed to collaborators interested in participating.
Part 3 is a series of recorded audio messages, intended as a humorous 'hotline' service that provides advice, emotional support and encouragement to resist the urge to impulse-buy clothing.
